Borgo Alle Coccinelle, Santa Luce and the Medieval villages

In the immediate area you can find many medieval villages that still have kept their unaltered charm of long ago.

SANTA LUCE

In the beginning, in the XIII century, Santa Luce (Cadolingi castle) was under the jurisdicition of the bishop's of Pisa, who held it under their control for a long time. In 1406, during the ascension of Pisa, this was one of the first castles to make an act of submission to the city of Florence.

The habitat of Santa Luce still maintains its medieval aspect with a circular structure in which the houses are distributed onto different levels under the parrocchial church of Santa Lucia.

In the surrounding area, the antique Pieve of Santa Luce (also called the Pieve of Sant'Angelo or Santa Luce of the Hills) is found, which dates back to the end of the XVIII century. The Pieve, origanlly from the VIII century, was built onto and expanded in the XII century. Today, there is a latin cross and single nave with apse that is the only original part of the primitive structure. On the outside, along the small alley way access to the church, there is the old octagonal baptismal fountain and some prominent parts of the old church. In Pomaia, the Santo Stefano Pieve was restored in 1781.

POMAIA

Pomaia is a little village set among the green hills of Pisa, placed in one of the most beautiful Tuscany countryside. It is a typical Medieval stoned village.

The historical centre is made up of small houses and the only building is in the church square. It is probably the original core.

During the last years, this village has become famous for a Tibetan Buddhist centre, from the same school of Dalai Lama, who has visited the centre several times. In this place of brotherhood and peace, the monks have built a little Tibetan centre, its chorten (stupas or statues), its prayers and its holy paintings.

The visit of the Buddhist centre in Pomaia is a chance of inter-religious meeting.

Castagneto Carducci is set on the top of a hill that overlooks the countryside and the near sea. This charming Medieval village springs up round the Castle of Della Gherardesca, built about during the year 1000.

The village has paved lanes, natural terraces that view the sea and the countryside, pleasant square, ancient craftsman shop and typical small restaurants.

Many historical evidences are worth of note such as the Praetorian Palace - now seat of the Municipality - S. Lorenzo and SS. Crucifix Churches (the latter because its woody crucifix of the XV century in the church).

At the beginning this village was named Castagneto Marittimo. Then, in the early XX c., it turned its name into Castagneto Carducci in honour of the great poet Giosuè Carducci that spent there many years of his life. Giosuè Carducci's house is now a museum full of evidences.

BOLGHERI

Bolgheri is located on a little height at the end of the famous Cypresses Boulevard that stretches from San Guido. The village is surrounded by woods, plenty of Mediterranean vegetation and a well-tilled plain.

Bolgheri is linked to Castagneto, - its borough - through "Via Bolgherese", a wonderful boulevard become famous as the "Wine Road" for its production of rare wines.

Through a mighty arch of a castle you will get into the old village. Indoors, among its ancient lanes and squares, little "shops" spring up. There you may buy the typical products of the area and taste the natural local speciality.

Between 1838 and 1848 Giosuè Carducci lived in Bolgheri, chanted it in its lines and this village became known all over the world.

The territory of Casale Marittimo is rich of archaeological finds testifying its ancient origins, like the Etruscan necropolis and other sepulchres equipped by fine funerary dowries dating back to the same time so that testifying the presence of this rich civilization in the territory, who settled down in Casale Marittimo for its richness of water springs and minerals.

Very interesting is also the ancient Church entitled to Saint Andrew, recently restored and transformed so to host the Municipal offices of Casale Marittimo.

The stone-made facade shows its original features and, on the main portal, a bass-relief made by Alberto Sparapani, portraying "Saint Andrew".

The interior of the church shows a wooden roof covered by painted trusses and it rich of numerous frescoes painted by Stefano Ghezzani. Particularly interesting are also the Our Lady of the Graces Chapel and the Saint Sebastian Church.

The first one was built in the XVIII-th century and it still saves today a copy of an original plate painted by some artist from Siena, whereas the Saint Sebastian Church was built on a pre-existing oratory and restored by using original materials coming from a Roman villa.

The Saint Sebastian Church still saves today a rare wooden sculpture by Giovanni Maria Tacci, dating back to the XVI-century and portraying a "Wounded Christ held by some Angels", whereas some of the finest art works belonging to the ancient building are saved today in the "Museum of Holy Art of Volterra", among them a painting portraying an "Our Lady with the Child between the Saints Sebastian and Rocco"

The village rises partially out on a hill top, but is still easily accessible between Collesalvetti, Ponsacco, Casciana Terme in the beautiful Pisan countryside of the lesser known Era Valley. Today the landscape is made up of fields and vineyards stretching towards Arno Valley; a heritage that many spend time revisiting on this land that belonged to the Etruscans, with its strategic commercial highways that stretched from Volterra to the north towards the lower Arno Valley.

For the same reason, the Era Valley was then fought over between the republics of Volterra, Pisa and finally Florence, who in the end won. This is how the antique Pisan castle of Lari (the Vicar castle of the XII century), came to be ruled by Florence and was transformed into the nucleus of the Medici fortress of the 1500's that now is embraced by the surrounding old houses of the village.

The village stands out in the green rustic surroundings, still completely intact and curiously suggestive, ideal for theatrical or musical performances and local food tastings from Chianti to pasta produced here. Art, in its precise form, is concentrated in the Santa Maria Assunta church, which is home to the 14th century marble Annunciation by Andrea Guardi and a golden Madonna by Francesco Melani.
